He grew up in a comfortable middle-class family and his mother would regularly take him to the Louvre Museum where he was inspired by the realist painters. He was a student at the Lycée Carnot during the Nazi occupation of Paris and risked travelling to classes in the evening despite the curfew imposed by the Nazi authorities. Later, he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He was devastated when, aged seventeen, his mother died of cancer. He suffered with melancholy throughout his life.

Faithful to his figurative style, he enjoyed worldwide popularity in the 1950s. He produced religious pieces, landscapes, portraits and still-lifes which were characterised by thick black lines, elongated forms and a lack of depth of field. He produced ‘miserabilist’ pictures of despair, too, including scenes of poverty and Holocaust victims. In 1958, The New York Times called him one of the “Fabulous Five” cultural figures of post-war France along with Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Sagan, Roger Vadim and Yves Saint Laurent. But his popularity took a nosedive after he was photographed for magazine articles living a celebrity lifestyle with big houses and a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce. He was seen as out of touch with the struggling economy of post-war France. Despite painting every day for the rest of his life, those early heady days were over. While suffering from Parkinson’s disease, he committed suicide at his home in southern France, aged 71.

Since his death, his work has been fetching big prices. In 2016, Nicholas Foulkes published his biography Bernard Buffet: The Invention of the Modern Mega-Artist and, in the same year, a large retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris. Buffet’s work continues to be popular and collectible.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/0911/9764/files/115_Small_6334987d-e651-47eb-afa0-e9ecf31dc770.jpg?v=1694548116
muse-des-arts-decoratifs-palais-du-louvre-paris-1959
Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris 1959

Printer: Mourlot (1 of 1,500 editions)

Dimensions: 75 x 51 cm

Condition: Very good condition

Frame: Charcoal

Description: An original lithograph in four colours. After initial rejection, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris. His early inspiration came from Cézanne, and in 1909, he lived in Montparnasse and met artists including Chagall and Delaunay. He was also inspired by the early cubism of Picasso and Braque. By 1911, he was one of the first painters, along with Metzinger, Gleizes, Le Fauconnier and Delaunay to bring cubism to the public’s attention at an exhibition organised by the Salon des Indépendants. He developed his own form of cubism that his critics termed ‘Tubism’ because of its focus on cylindrical forms. Regarded as a forerunner of pop art, his work changed from cubist-derived abstraction which covered his ‘mechanical’ period inspired from active service at the front in the First World War; designing sets and costumes for ballet; filmmaking and series’ of routine human activities, to distinctive realist imagery. In the last years of his life, he illustrated books, painted murals, designed stained-glass windows, mosaics, ceramic sculptures and set and costume designs.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/0911/9764/files/111_Small_6f8925da-fa43-4954-9a44-8b26a8723a15.jpg?v=1694854923
musee-toulouse-lautrec-albi-1961
Musée Toulouse Lautrec, Albi 1961

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 76 x 55 cm

Condition: Very good

Frame: Due to be framed in oak

Artist: Henri Matisse (1869-1954) the French artist, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter was one of the undisputed masters and influential artists of 20th century art. The eye, all in black, is set in the centre of the flat blue area and is matched in design by the black line dividing the face from the rest of the blue area. The eye on the right is so constructed as to carry the white, and if you place your hand to the left of the nose, just covering the left eye, you will notice the profile effect that the face takes on. Remove your hand and the full face emerges again. Thus, you have the combination of full face and profile that dominated Picasso’s work in the forties.’ [JKF The Posters of Picasso p.29]

Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France. The son of a miner, the young Édouard witnessed devastating injuries and deaths from a pit explosion as well as horrific brutalities during strikes. During the First World War, his school was closed and he spent his days at his mother’s coffee shop just ten kilometres from the front. A soldier stopped one day and drew the boy’s portrait on his way to the trenches and Pignon knew then that he, too, wanted to paint. After a spell in the mines and a factory, he went to Paris in 1931 and worked for Renault, attending evening classes for painting lessons at the Boulevard Montparnasse School. He joined the Communist party in 1933 and the Resistance during the Second World War. In 1937, he contributed to an exhibition which included works by Bazaine and Tal Coat, and later that year exhibited with Braque, Léger and Picasso, the latter who would become a great friend for three decades. Inspired by Léger, for his first exhibition in 1939, at the Salon des Indépendants, he painted mines, factories and union meetings.

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 67 x 42 cm

Condition: Very good

Frame: Oak

Artist: Serge Poliakoff was a Russian-born French modernist painter. In 1923, he was living in Paris as a musician regularly performing in Russian cabarets, and studying fine art at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Frochot where he was taught by former Fauve, Othon Friesz. Much of his work at that stage was still academic. It wasn’t until his mid-30s, when he moved to London and began to mix with fellow countryman Wassily Kandinsky, Sonia and Robert Delaunay and Otto Freundlich, that he developed his distinct way of abstract painting with colour, light and form that he became one of the most important abstract painters of the 20th century.

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 61 x 40 cm

Very good: Very good

Frame: Charcoal

Artist: Graham Sutherland was a prolific English artist known for his paintings of abstract landscapes and portraits of public figures. He also worked with glass, fabrics, prints and portraits, his work largely inspired by landscape and religion. Printmaking, mostly of romantic landscapes, dominated Sutherland’s work during the 1920s, developing his skill in watercolours before switching to oil paints in the 1940s. It was these oil paintings, often of surreal, organic landscapes of the Pembrokeshire coast, that secured his reputation as a leading British modern artist. Sutherland taught at a number of art colleges, notably at Chelsea School of Art, and at Goldsmiths College where he had been a student. He served as an official war artist in the Second World War drawing industrial scenes on the British home front. As such, Sutherland was then commissioned to design the massive central tapestry in the new Coventry Cathedral in post-war Britain.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/0911/9764/files/081_Small_bf1360d3-ab8b-42a8-a6d8-d262568dd674.jpg?v=1694863090
portraits-imaginaires-21-2-69-1971
Portraits Imaginaires 21.2.69 (I), 1971 (128/250 French Edition)

Printer: Guillard & Gourdon (numbered 128 of 250 French Editions)

Dimensions: 66 x 50 cm

Condition: Very good

Frame: Floated on cream mount with a charcoal frame

Description: This lithograph is one of Picasso’s 29 exceptional and rare Portraits Imaginaires. The artist began the series during a feverish painting spell at the beginning of 1969, aged 87. After poor press from exhibitions, he was exhausted and depressed and, inspired by the colours of the south of France, and Rembrandt’s prolific output right up until his death, he began to do something he had never done before. He saved corrugated paper and other packaging materials from the deliveries of art supplies, and on 30th January, he started painting these mainly masculine portraits inspired by images of his father, Rembrandt, Shakespeare, Balzac and others. He finished his 29th painting on the 7th May, 1969. Born in Moscow, he was the thirteenth of fourteen children. His mother was hugely religious and his father was a racehorse breeder and supplier of horses to the Czar’s cavalry. The young Serge fled from the Revolution of 1917 and lived in Constantinople as a talented guitarist.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/0911/9764/files/154A_Small_70e7da32-c8a7-441d-a08e-63915b3abfea.jpg?v=1712127899
tropical-france-menton-1965
Tropical France, Menton, 1964

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 80 x 58 cm

Very good: Very good

Frame: Oak

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/0911/9764/files/156A_Small_564ddcf6-79ca-4e53-abb4-110dbdcdfe1e.jpg?v=1712127768
peintures-dessins-et-sculptures-scene-nationale-dorleans-et-du-loiret
Peintures, dessins et sculptures, Scene Nationale d'Orleans et du Loiret

Dimensions: 174 x 118 cm (a whopper!!)

Very good: Very good

Frame: Oak

Artist: Karel Appel (1921-2006)

New acquisition, more info to follow:

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/0911/9764/files/DSC06532_Small_25162689-be59-4701-8cdb-ae03400799e8.jpg?v=1719657455
portraits-imaginaires-7-5-69-1971
Portraits Imaginaires 7.5.69, 1971 (218/250 French Edition)

Printer: Guillard & Gourdon (numbered 218 of 250 French Editions)

So excited with the results, Picasso spent many months with Marcel Salinas to reproduce his first ever series of original works as fine art lithographs. Two print runs of 250 copies were made: one for the French market and one for America.

Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France. As one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, his extraordinary artistic genius made him the ‘rock star’ of the Modern Art world pioneering cubism, surrealism, expressionism and collage. Throughout his long career, he produced more than 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, theatre sets, and costumes. From the mid-1940s, he also worked with the Mourlot studios in Paris and created over 400 lithographs and exhibition posters. As well as Fernand Mourlot, Henri Deschamps was Picasso's favourite and most trusted master printer at the studio and they collaborated together from 1945 right up until Picasso’s death in 1973.

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 66 x 48 cm

Condition: Very good condition

Frame: Oak

Artist: Roger Bezombes was a French painter, sculptor, designer and printmaker.

Dimensions: 68 x 51 cm

Condition: Very good, printed on arches paper

Frame: Floated on oak

Description: The exquisite image in this early and rare poster was used to promote Terechkovitch’s exhibition in Paris in 1953.

Artist: Constantin (Kostia) Terechkovitch (1902-1978) was a Russian painter.
