From school, he followed his family’s trade as a house painter and decorator, taking art classes at night before moving to Paris to study at the Académie Humbert in Montmartre. Inspired by the impressionists, he focused on landscapes with increasing use of bold colour and shapes which resulted in his alliance with fauvism. This artistic movement, steered by Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, André Derain, Othon Friesz and Raoul Dufy broke new ground in art as it moved away from representational form. Braque had by then met Picasso and between 1906 and the outbreak of the First World War, they began to further deconstruct artistic norms to develop cubism. Braque sustained a severe head injury during the war and was slow to return to art but it was said his work was bolder, freer, and his style continued to evolve as he embraced collage, sculpting, lithography, jewellery design and stage sets. The artist began the series during a feverish painting spell at the beginning of 1969, aged 87. After poor press from exhibitions, he was exhausted and depressed and, inspired by the colours of the south of France, and Rembrandt’s prolific output right up until his death, he began to do something he had never done before. He saved corrugated paper and other packaging materials from the deliveries of art supplies, and on 30th January, he started painting these mainly masculine portraits inspired by images of his father, Rembrandt, Shakespeare, Balzac and others. He finished his 29th painting on the 7th May, 1969. So excited with the results, Picasso spent many months with Marcel Salinas to reproduce his first ever series of original works as fine art lithographs. Two print runs of 250 copies were made: one for the French market and one for America.

Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France. As one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, his extraordinary artistic genius made him the ‘rock star’ of the Modern Art world pioneering cubism, surrealism, expressionism and collage. Throughout his long career, he produced more than 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, theatre sets, and costumes. From the mid-1940s, he also worked with the Mourlot studios in Paris and created over 400 lithographs and exhibition posters. As well as Fernand Mourlot, Henri Deschamps was Picasso's favourite and most trusted master printer at the studio and they collaborated together from 1945 right up until Picasso’s death in 1973.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0761/0911/9764/files/133_Small_580dd8f1-0661-4a85-9dfa-f599e565482c.jpg?v=1699526933
musee-des-arts-decratifs-paris-1961
Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris 1961

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 68 x 48 cm

Condition: Very good

Frame: Framed in mid oak

Description: This exhibition poster was designed using a silkscreen technique by Mourlot for Matisse’s cut-outs’ exhibition: Les Grandes Gouaches Découpées at the Museum of Decorative Arts at the Louvre, Paris in 1961.

Artist: Henri Matisse (1869-1954) the French artist, draughtsman, printmaker, sculptor and painter was one of the undisputed masters and influential artists of 20th century art. The son of a miner, the young Édouard witnessed devastating injuries and deaths from a pit explosion as well as horrific brutalities during strikes. During the First World War, his school was closed and he spent his days at his mother’s coffee shop just ten kilometres from the front. A soldier stopped one day and drew the boy’s portrait on his way to the trenches and Pignon knew then that he, too, wanted to paint. After a spell in the mines and a factory, he went to Paris in 1931 and worked for Renault, attending evening classes for painting lessons at the Boulevard Montparnasse School. He joined the Communist party in 1933 and the Resistance during the Second World War. In 1937, he contributed to an exhibition which included works by Bazaine and Tal Coat, and later that year exhibited with Braque, Léger and Picasso, the latter who would become a great friend for three decades. Inspired by Léger, for his first exhibition in 1939, at the Salon des Indépendants, he painted mines, factories and union meetings.

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 68 x 51 cm

Condition: Very good, printed on arches paper

Frame: Floated on oak

Description: The exquisite image in this early and rare poster was used to promote Terechkovitch’s exhibition in Paris in 1953.

Artist: Constantin (Kostia) Terechkovitch (1902-1978) was a Russian painter.

After initial rejection, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris. His early inspiration came from Cézanne, and in 1909, he lived in Montparnasse and met artists including Chagall and Delaunay. He was also inspired by the early cubism of Picasso and Braque. By 1911, he was one of the first painters, along with Metzinger, Gleizes, Le Fauconnier and Delaunay to bring cubism to the public’s attention at an exhibition organised by the Salon des Indépendants. He developed his own form of cubism that his critics termed ‘Tubism’ because of its focus on cylindrical forms. Regarded as a forerunner of pop art, his work changed from cubist-derived abstraction which covered his ‘mechanical’ period inspired from active service at the front in the First World War; designing sets and costumes for ballet; filmmaking and series’ of routine human activities, to distinctive realist imagery. In the last years of his life, he illustrated books, painted murals, designed stained-glass windows, mosaics, ceramic sculptures and set and costume designs.

Printer: Mourlot

Dimensions: 66 x 48 cm

Condition: Very good

Frame: Framed in oak

Description: This original lithograph, illustrated with an image of a French bandstand, was printed for Dufy’s exhibition at Galerie Louis Carré, six months after his death. As well as Fernand Mourlot, Henri Deschamps was Picasso's favourite and most trusted master printer at the studio and they collaborated together from 1945 right up until Picasso’s death in 1973.

Printer: Guillard & Gourdon (numbered 48 of 250 American Editions)

Dimensions: 66 x 50 cm

Condition: Very good

Frame: Floated on cream mount with a charcoal frame

Description: This lithograph is one of Picasso’s 29 exceptional and rare Portraits Imaginaires.
