Description: Rolf Gérard spent much of his career painting the places he loved most. Beaches, cafés, harbours and coastal towns around the Mediterranean became recurring subjects, all captured with a freshness and lightness that made his work immediately recognisable.

This original exhibition poster was published for Gérard’s 1955 exhibition at Galerie Lucie Weill in Paris, a respected Left Bank gallery that regularly exhibited leading contemporary artists. His loose brushwork and luminous colour perfectly suited the relaxed atmosphere of the French and Italian Rivieras, where he found much of his inspiration.

Gérard also worked extensively in the theatre, bringing a natural sense of movement and composition to his paintings. The result is a scene that feels full of life without ever becoming overworked. It captures the easy elegance of the Mediterranean in the years after the war and remains a wonderful example of the optimism that defined so much French painting during the 1950s.
