Description: Pierre Guiramand’s exhibition at Galerie Motte in Geneva in 1969 came at a time when his reputation was well established beyond France. This original poster reflects the confident style that had made him one of the most distinctive painters of the Nouvelle École de Paris, recognised for his luminous colour and ability to reduce everyday scenes to their essential forms.

Awarded the Prix de Rome in 1952, Guiramand spent several years at the Villa Medici in Rome, where Mediterranean light and classical architecture left a lasting impression on his work. Throughout his career, he favoured broad areas of colour and a few carefully placed lines, creating paintings that suggest atmosphere and movement without relying on fine detail.

The image chosen for this exhibition perfectly captures that approach. It is both expressive and economical, revealing an artist who understood exactly how much to leave out and what to include. That balance gives Guiramand’s work its enduring freshness and unmistakable character.

Artist: Paul Guiramand (1926-2008) was a French painter and theatre set designer. He studied at L’École des Beaux-Arts and was influenced by Brianchon, Picasso and Matisse. During periods of travel in Spain and Italy, he held his first exhibition at Marlborough Fine Art in London when he was living primarily at the Villa Medicis in Florence with Tilson, Francis Bacon and Corpora. In 1954 he began working with Charles Sorlier, a master printer at Mourlot’s Atelier where he began a series of lithographs. His work was exhibited at key galleries and museums including Galerie Taménaga, Osaka in Japan.
