Artist: Jacques Germain was a French painter and prominent member of the Abstraction Lyrique group in post-war Paris. He studied at the Académie Moderne in 1931 under Fernand Léger, going on to work with Wassily Kandinsky at the Bauhaus in 1932. During the Second World War, he worked in advertising in Paris and was a prisoner for three years. It wasn’t until after the war, in 1947, that Germain first exhibited his work at the Salon des Surindépendants. By the 1950s, he was exploring abstraction, developing his style with a group of other artists including Mathieu, Bryen, Riopelle and Lanskoy and achieved international status, with his work regularly featuring in exhibitions around the world.
