Artist: Bernard Cathelin (1919-2004), Paris born Cathelin was a French painter and a member of the School of Paris with the likes of Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Dufy and Brianchon. After volunteering for military service during the Second World War, still aged only 26, studied at L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in the studio of Maurice Brianchon (1899-1979) the French painter of ‘Poetic Reality’ and member of the influential Salon d’Automne committee. Cathelin’s favourite themes were still life, landscapes and portraits of women.
After graduating, he stayed on to teach until 1953 and began to travel for inspiration visiting Mexico, Russia, Japan, Italy, Spain and Japan. His work, which included richly textured and vivid coloured oil paintings and lithographs, featured in over 50 exhibitions. The Musée de Valence paid him a special tribute with a dedicated retrospective of his work in 1997. The attendance figures to see this popular artist’s pictures set a new record for the museum.
