Artist: Bernard Lorjou (1908–1986) was a French painter, lithographer, and illustrator known for his expressive and often confrontational figurative style. Born in Blois, he began working at a young age and moved to Paris at seventeen, eventually joining the silk design house Ducharne, where he rose to artistic director. Inspired by Francisco Goya, Honoré Daumier, and the tumult of contemporary events, Lorjou rejected abstraction and championed a return to bold, narrative figuration. In 1948, he co-founded the anti-abstractionist group L’Homme Témoin (“The Witness Man”), advocating for socially engaged art. His work dealt with themes of injustice, violence, politics, and human suffering, rendered in powerful brushstrokes and intense colour. A prolific exhibitor throughout Europe, Lorjou remained a passionate and provocative voice in 20th-century French painting.
