André Lhote

André Lhote was a French painter, writer and influential teacher. His calm, thoughtful approach helped many artists find their way in modern art. Born in Bordeaux, he trained traditionally before embracing Cubism, though always on his own terms. Rather than breaking the world apart, Lhote was interested in order, rhythm and structure, creating paintings that balance modern geometry with recognisable figures and landscapes.

Teaching played a central role in his life providing artists with practical tools to understand composition and colour, influencing generations of painters, designers, and photographers. Lhote also kept an active studio practice and collaborated with Atelier Mourlot, where lithography helped him refine his ideas.
