“There is always an element of surprise in the screen-printing process. That is what makes it magic.”

Hommage Art is delighted to welcome London-based Italian artist Giuseppe D’Innella for a special guest exhibition from 17–30 August, showcasing a brand new collection of vibrant paintings and hand-pulled screen prints inspired by the landscapes of southern Italy and England.

Born in Puglia and raised in Rome, Giuseppe has lived and worked across Europe, Venezuela, Japan and Australia. Yet it is Puglia, the land of his ancestors, that continues to inspire his most distinctive work. Every June, before the wheat harvest, he returns to sketch the rolling countryside, olive groves and hilltop villages, when the landscape glows with the rich yellow of ripening crops – one of his favourite colours.

Although rooted in real places, Giuseppe’s work is anything but conventional landscape painting. “I am not satisfied by the colours I find in nature so I increase their intensity until they become unreal.” Influenced by the bold colour of the Fauves and driven by an instinctively optimistic outlook, he avoids grey altogether, creating luminous compositions that celebrate warmth, light and memory.

Working in the traditional medium of screen printing, each colour is printed separately through its own stencil, layer upon layer, producing extraordinary richness and depth. Even while sketching outdoors, Giuseppe is already simplifying and abstracting the landscape, thinking ahead to the demands of the printing process.

Back in the studio, memory gives way to composition. “My intention is not to capture a landscape” he explains,
“but to use a landscape as the source for a new creation.”
One landscape returns throughout the exhibition: a hill crowned by a castle overlooking a friend’s farm, where Giuseppe has spent many happy summers sketching as an artist in residence. After more than twenty-five years of returning to the same place, it continues to reveal new possibilities, proving that familiarity can be every bit as inspiring as discovering.

We will be hosting a celebratory drinks reception at Hommage on Thursday 20th August, 6-8pm.

We'd love to see you there. If you'd like to join us, please RSVP to georgie@hommage-art.com to attend.
