Description: This original exhibition poster was published for Bazaine’s 1965 exhibition at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, then housed in the Palais de Tokyo. A museum exhibition of this scale reflected the growing recognition of his contribution to post-war French painting and his place among the leading artists of his generation.

Bazaine’s work is rooted in observation rather than theory. The movement of the sea, the texture of the coastline and the changing quality of light all found their way into his paintings, transformed into sweeping brushstrokes and luminous colour. This poster captures an artist working with complete confidence and remains an excellent example of the optimism and originality that defined French painting in the years after the war.

Artist: Jean René Bazaine (1904-2001) was a French painter and writer. The great grandson of the English Court portraitist Sir George Hayter, he was born in Paris and studied sculpture with Paul Landowski before switching to painting at the École des Beaux-Art. His work was first shown in group exhibitions with Fautrier, Pougny, Goerg and Gromaire from 1930. And with the encouragement of Bonnard, held his first solo exhibition in 1932. After the Second World War, Galerie Maeght hosted his first major solo exhibition in 1949/50 with many more thereafter.
