Description: When the Mourlot studio opened a New York branch after a successful exhibition organised by the Smithsonian Institution in 1963, it invited a number of leading international artists to create original lithographic posters to mark the occasion. This six-colour lithographic poster from 1967 was created by Alexander Calder as part of that series.

Using bold areas of primary colour and fluid, organic forms, the composition reflects the same visual language as his sculpture. While the image appears abstract at first, closer observation often reveals motifs drawn from the natural world, including stars, plants and animals.

On Arches Paper.

Artist: Alexander Calder (1898 - 1976)
