Born in Russia, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany before moving to Paris in 1905 to continue studies at the Académie de la Palette in Montparnasse. After divorcing the German art dealer and gallery owner Wilhelm Uhde, she married the French artist, Robert Delaunay in 1910. The couple co-founded the Orphism art movement named in 1913 by their friend and poet, Guillaume Apollinaire to describe their version of Cubism which was based on strong colours and geometric shapes. Sonia lived most of her working life in Paris. She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964, and was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor the following year.
