Born in Ajaccio and closely associated with Marseille and Provence, Ambrogiani became known for his intensely coloured landscapes and scenes of everyday rural life. In Ploughing, he reduces the landscape and figures to broad, expressive passages of brilliant blue, yellow, orange and red, giving the traditional agricultural scene a striking sense of energy and movement.

The work is characteristic of Ambrogiani’s bold Mediterranean palette and spontaneous approach to colour, for which he became one of the distinctive figures of post-war Provençal painting.
