André Brasilier is a French painter, born in 1929, and one of the last living artists to have trained as a modernist at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris after the war. Studying there in 1949, he developed a distinctive visual language that blends abstraction with expressionism, led by colour, rhythm and emotion rather than strict realism.

Much of Brasilier’s work was inspired by his wife, Chantal, whose love of horses runs through his paintings in the form of graceful, recurring equestrian scenes. Alongside luminous landscapes and elegant figures, these images create a poetic, optimistic world that feels both timeless and deeply personal. Today, his work continues to resonate intensely, and he is one of the most popular and much-loved artists in our gallery.
