Emilio Grau-Sala was an artist who painted with obvious affection for the world around him. He was born in Barcelona and trained at the Escola de Belles Arts before the Spanish Civil War forced him to leave Spain. Settling in Paris, he found refuge and inspiration and became closely associated with the School of Paris.

Paris suited Grau-Sala perfectly. Its cafés, streets, theatres and everyday rituals appear again and again in his work, painted with warmth, ease and a natural sense of rhythm. His style draws on post-Impressionism but is lighter and more decorative, with fluid brushwork and colour used for pleasure as much as structure. He moved comfortably between painting and illustration, producing book illustrations and posters alongside his studio work, and was widely exhibited in France during his lifetime.

What makes Grau-Sala’s work endure is its humanity. His scenes feel lived-in rather than staged – relaxed, elegant and gently nostalgic, without ever tipping into sentimentality. Today, his paintings are still admired for their joyful colour, effortless charm and the unmistakable sense that he genuinely loved the life he was painting.
